Het Vierde Kruis, The Fourth Cross

By clashing the iconic Amsterdam’s flag with the more recent one honoring the 750th anniversary of the city of Amsterdam, The Fourth Cross is a work that embraces the people, the past and present of the city, including a glimpse at its future and upcoming changes.
Hundreds of metal units are bound together, each carrying marks, stories and thoughts of the hands that worked on it in an action that celebrates connection and support. A new flag that is also a blanket, a metal patchwork-quilt protecting and empowering the city and its people for the future that lies ahead.
The Fourth Cross is the result of a joint project between the Amsterdam Museum and the Atelier Meister-Scauso; 25 Amsterdam residents from 11 different nationalities have contributed to the design and the making of the work.
The work has been exhibited in the Amsterdam Museum during the exhibition Collecting the City #4.
